Thoughts on the PSP Go

sony-psp-go_1PSP Go

Last month at E3, Sony announced the fourth addition to the PSP (Playstation Portable) family, the PSP Go. This ‘futuristic’ gadget looks impressive. The two previous additions to the original PlayStation Portable have been largely unexciting, but Sony hopes to recapture the market with the more portable option.

This new PSP has been, as expected, completely redesigned. This new PSP has a huge slide out screen to enhance game play, movie viewing and internet surfing. Graphics in this hand held device have supposedly been highly improved, and publishers have announced a slew of new games to be released when the device arrives in October.

Keep on the look out for the new PSP Go…

This week in Gaming: Madworld

Madworld Platform: Nintendo Wii

Developers: Platform Games, Sega

Classification: MA 15+

Genre: Action, Fighting

Now I don’t usually give a five star rating for any game, but for this one, it deserves it. Sega and Platform games have teamed up to create the recently released Madworld for Wii. Wii is not known for  being a hardcore gaming console, rather a family game, however this game completely changes the theory.

You play as Jack, a survivalist in a city that has been taken over by another race. You are forced to compete in a game show called ‘Death Watch’ where you have to fight enemies in order to survive. You go around the city killing enemies in the most brutal of brutal ways using weapons such as Chainsaws, Spiked Baseball bats and even ninja blades.  Each kill gains you a certain amount of points, the more brutal the kill, the higher amount of points rewarded. In order to win the game show, you must gain a high amount of points.

You fight around a map, with a boss at each level, each level is made up of the most twisted ideas such as ninjas riding on motorbikes and bus’ with metal spikes on the side.Through out each level you acquire new weapons such as massive poles, ninja swords and studded baseball bats. However you have your trusty , rusty chain saw the whole way through the game .

The colours in the game include black, white and a whole lot of red! This allows the graphics to be better on the Wii as it was not as much hard work to make only three colours in the game , and the designers could work on rendering the graphics to make it great for the Wii. Madworld is also multiplayer. You can play side by side with a friend and compete in the most gruesome challenges. This game also includes a 15 song hip-hop sound track to match the game, which gives the game an even better feel to it.

Who ever came up with this game is either a mental patient or a complete and utter genius. This game is a must have for your Wii, and is  a total classic. I hope all Wii users out there can  experience the glory of this game.

Sony gets stingy with Network downloads

The PlayStation3 boasts it’s amazing graphics, great gameplay, built in Blu-ray player, HD games and interactive (and free) downloads. Almost.

As we know, Sony’s PS3 is known for its wide range of free online or downloadable gaming content, unlike Microsoft, which forces users to pay for online game play via the Xbox Live subscription service. One of the few notable advantages of the PS3, Sony recently announced that they have to pay a whopping(!) $0.16 per gigabyte downloaded.

Sony has decided to resolve this problem by sending a message out to all of their loyal publishers, warning them it’s detrimental affects on Sir Stringer’s salary, thus supposedly encouraging those publishers to re-think their decisions on how many products they produce and publish.

This is going to end up having detrimental effects on PlayStation3 users in the long run, as many smaller, independent publishers will be less likely to research and develop free content.

Come on Sony, don’t be so stingy! – o.

This Week In Gaming: Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead

Platforms: PC , Xbox 360

Genre:  FPS , Zombies , Horror

Developers:  Turtle Rock Studios ,  Valve, Certain A

Engine: Source

Classification : MA15+
Left 4 dead tells the story of four ( hence the name ) survivors in a city , where a virus has spread , turning people into zombies. You must go through houses , apartments , hospitals , alleys and more to reach the safe house. Although there are many games similar to this on the market , nothing matches up to the graphics display, game play and horror of this game. Many other horror games have well anticipated story lines and characters that you are sure will be in there , however left 4 dead has taken a whole different view on horror games as a whole.

Designed by the makers of Counterstrike : Source and Half Life 2 , this game had a repuation of high rated games to live up to , and it did. Apon its release on 12th December 2008 , it was an instant hit , with thousands of people hitting the shops to get them selves a copy. This game, although being extremely scary, it is incredibly fun , and the developers have pulled off one hell of a game.Another great feature of this game is that it runs on steam , which gives you easier access to online gaming with friends, or on your own.

Left 4 Dead is an instant classic and is fun for all gamers.

Review: Aqua Jigsaw & Jigsaw Wild

Aqua Jigsaw & Jigsaw Wild

Developer: 99 Games, Robosoft
Genre: Games (Puzzle)
Device: iPod touch 1G (Compatible with all iPhone and iPod touch models)
Price: AJ – $1.99 (USD), $2.49 (AUD) JW – $1.99 (USD), $2.49 (AUD)

Aqua Jigsaw is a fun mobile game that keeps you going on those long trips that seem to drag on forever. It’s a classic jigsaw game with a nice twist – you’re timed on how fast you can assemble your puzzle together. The goal is to beat your score, or beat friends’ scores. A particularly neat feature is being able to customize your own puzzle, according to a saved photo of your choice.

With a name like ‘Aqua Jigsaw’, it’s kinda obvious that all of the puzzle you’re solving are water and  sea based, giving the player a nice theme to play with. The 24 photos featured in the game are aesthetically pleasing and are customized to the iPhone’s 320×480 screen, varying from sea animals to land forms – they seem to fit the game perfectly.

Jigsaw Wild is (unsurprisingly) similar to Aqua Jigsaw. Gameplay doesn’t differ greatly from that of AJ, but opts for a different theme. Jigsaw Wild includes a variety of good quality images – birds, insects, reptiles and animals etc. Like Aqua Jigsaw, it’s a worthy addition to your iPhone or iPod touch.

Both games load quickly, rarely lag, and perhaps most importantly, don’t cause a major drain on your battery life. I was impressed with the nicely polished animations and encourage you to take a look at these games.
