UPDATE: Microsoft has told its Zune owners to wait until 2009, where the player will magically fix itself up. Hopefully.
Last night, between midnight and 2am, 30GB Zunes around the world shut down and restarted, hanging on the startup logo for several hours. The dead players are yet to be fixed.
It seems this mass-freezing does only affects the 30GB model (running version 3.1 firmware) of Microsoft’s under-achieving MP3 player. This forum (with almost 2,000 replies) on Microsoft’s official Zune website proves that this strange turn of events has happened on a global scale.
Although Microsoft has left an official reply concerning when the players will be working again, it is very unusual to see thousands of MP3 players suddenly stop working – in unison. It will be interesting to see when Microsoft gets these players working again, but in the mean time I’ll be smiling just a little more when I put my apocalypse-free iPod on this afternoon. – r.
