Name: Super Monkey Ball (version 1.0.1)
Developer: Sega America
Price: $12.99 (AUD)
Super Monkey Ball was always going to be one of the most anticipated and popular games for the iPhone. SEGA got the ball rolling (sorry, couldn’t help myself) in March at Apple’s SDK event when the public got their first glimpse at what was in store for games on the iPhone. I found it to be a fun 3D racing adventure game with some control flaws.
The game begins with a very clean level & character selector. The game includes 110 “stages”, in 5 “worlds” (Monkey Island, Smooth Sherbet, Detritus Desert, Volcanic Pools and Space Case) that can be unlocked by completing the previous world’s stages. Each world has 20 stages & 2 levels, however if you collect all 10 bananas in one stage and make it through the goal without falling out you’ll receive a crown. Earn 10 crowns in one level and you’ll unlock a hidden stage. Alternatively, there is an Instant Play feature, Practice and Tutorials.
The game is fun and addicting. The levels are detailed and the game’s graphics boast the iPhone’s touch-screen capabilities. The game makes good use of the built-in accelerometer to deliver a enjoyable diversion, however it does have some faults.
Firstly, (and perhaps most importantly) the control is difficult to maintain, especially for casual gamers (whom SEGA are targeting). Secondly, there is currently no feature to save multiple games, so once you have finished the game you can’t go back and start again. Finally, it would be nice to see some sort of Wi-Fi multiplayer mode to further enhance the game.
All in all, I believe Super Monkey Ball has earned it’s place as one of the best games to download for any iPhone/iPod touch owner.
